梅花引·荆溪阻雪:Plum Blossom Citing·Jing Xi Snow Barrier (by 蒋捷 Jiang Jie)

*poem mentioned in Chaos of Beauty chapter twenty-six

snow

{{Plum Blossom Citing · Jing Xi Snow Barrier}}

The white gull [as though] asking me, mooring that lone boat,

Is the body being held back, [or] is the heart being held back?

Should your heart remain [here], why are [your] brows knitted together?

Night wind hits the small cabin curtains, the lights [inside] dizzily dancing,

Facing the idle shadow, cold and desolate, recalling past travels with friends.

Past travelling friends, are they still there?

[Recalling] the building amongst the flowers, the boat under the willow trees.

Dreaming, dreaming, even dreaming cannot bring me back,

[Only showing] the cold water and air of emptiness [before me].

[Staring at the] misty yellow clouds (dim skies, snow clouds), [snow] soaking through cotton [clothes].

They all say no one holds such deep sorrows like me,

Amongst the snow tonight, there are plum blossoms, like the melancholy in me. (The plum blossoms covered in plain white, like his sorrowful heart)

Méi Huā Yǐn·Jīngxī Zǔ Xuě

(Bái ōu wèn wǒ pō gū zhōu)

(Shì shēn liú, shì xīn liú)

(Xīn ruò liú shí, hé shì suǒ méi tóu)

(Fēng pāi xiǎo lián dēng yūn wǔ)

(Duì xián yǐng, lěng qīng qīng, yì jiù yóu)

(Jiù yóu jiù yóu jīn zài fǒu)

(Huā wài lóu, liǔxià zhōu)

(Mèng yě mèng yě, mèng bù dào)

(Hán shuǐ kōng liú)

(Mò mò huáng yún, shī tòu mù mián qiú)

(Dōu dào wú rén chóu shì wǒ)

(Jīn yè xuě, yǒu méi huā, shì wǒ chóu)

The poet expresses his feelings of melancholy when his boat was blocked by a snow barrier in Jing Xi (today’s southern Jiangsu). The poem uses a melodious rhythm of lively tones, weaving in warm memories of carefree and delightful times, into a cold and cheerless picture, displaying an unrestrained realm of art, clear and beautiful. Upon reciting it, it gives one the feeling, like that of appreciating a graceful capriccio, its impromptu lyricism, creates a melody of freedom, rich in fantasy.
